In their oxides, most rare-earth elements only have a valence of 3 and form sesquioxides (cerium forms CeO 2). Five different crystal structures are known, depending on the element and the temperature.

The two most common structures formed by the rare earth ternary oxides are the perovskite, RMO3, and the garnet, R3M5O12, where M is a metal atom. The perovskite structure is a closed lattice with the R located at the eight corners of the unit cell.
