In timing chain drives, the chain joint, consisting of bush and pin, is the most critical component regarding wear and energy efficiency. Due to the drive design layout, there are relative motions inside the chain joints.

Other methods of supporting the return run are roller support (fig. 3.2) and Wear or guide shoes (fig. 3.3). Supported carrying and return with catenary is preferred as the catenary will ensure correct chain and sprocket engagement and more importantly reduce chain joint wear as minimum tension and flexing is applied.

Lap Joints. Lap joints are available in 2, 3 and 4 pitch configurations. Lap joints are considered one of the more economical joining methods, providing high strength while maintaining most of the belts flexibility. Rods can be threaded, fastened, or backing plate used for large diameter sprockets.
